Some are straight showdowns or “duels” as the game calls them. These skills mostly revolve around enhancing his carrying capacity for ammunition and boosting his concentration duration.Įach level ends with a “boss battle” of a few different types, most equally irritating in the grand tradition of boss fights this is where the game balances out its fun with tedium and the drudgery of reloads. Additionally, Greaves earns experience points with each kill (with bonus points for headshots, long shots, kill streaks, et cetera) and upon “levelling up,” he can unlock a skill from one of three trees, corresponding to each of the three main weapons in the game. Greaves can carry up to two weapons at once, a long gun (rifle or shotgun) and a pistol, as well as dynamite. ![]() In addition to shooting from the hip and aiming down his iron sights, Greaves has a “bullet time” ability referred to in this game as “concentration” and it relies on a meter that fills as he takes out enemies. The basic gameplay consists of Greaves moving through an area and taking on a fixed number of foes that appear in specific locations. These collectibles provide an actual historical context to the characters, weapons, and events alluded to in the story. The game nods at this not only with the dialog among the saloon patrons, but also through the “nuggets of truth” found throughout the game. As in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow, we’re presented with an unreliable narrator whose version of events may or may not reflect actual historical fact. Greaves claims to have met, killed/grievously wounded, or been partnered with some of the Old West’s most famous lawmen and most notorious criminals. The vast majority of the story is told in flashback as Greaves reminisces in 1910 in a bar in Abilene, KS, holding court with a small audience with varying levels of credulity. Instead it is the tale of Silas Greaves, a man driven to become a bounty hunter in order to get his revenge on the villains who murdered his brother and left him for dead. CRASHING ENTERING THE SALOON TALE OF 2 WASTELANDS SERIESFor good or ill, this fourth entry into the Call of Juarez series has very little to do with Juarez or the previous three games. It definitely has its good points: the story is decent and the core mechanics are solid however, this is almost offset by the absurd boss-battle scenarios and duels. ![]() After spending around 15 hours with Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, it’s tough for me to say whether I’d recommend this game to anyone else.
